This should embarass every single "Conservative" that has ever lived. The GOP tactics in Congress are so wrought with dishonesty and disrespect for the legislative process that one can only wonder how they sleep at night. And, once again, I wish to thank the majority of Republicans for showing their true colors as the snivlling, conniving puppets for the Greedy One Percent.

And, you'd think that they would be too embarassed to even attempt it- espescially when reading how shamefully they ruled when in the majority. But, with a nation full of civics allergic Rush-tards and an "MC Rove" media machine, it's safe to operate in Congress with the integrity of a mafia lawyer. In a related note, Focus on the Family has chosen a picture of Tom Delay's blood-soaked-middle-finger being sucked on by an Iraqi orphan as it's new logo. Dr James Dobson explained the move in a statement: "The picture of Eddie Haskell dressed as an altar boy watching a lynching, no longer carries the integrity it used to. So, in an effort to show not just our values but also our strong political ties, we gave Jack Abramoff a bunch of money and he brought back one heckuva picture. We decided it would better serve the Lord to update our image for a whole new generation of Christies." Adding "And that's Iraqi blood too. Ol' Tom wanted people to know that."

Anyway, it could just be laziness on the reporters' end. It could also be a ratings driven system and policy and procedure don't sell. But, I have to say, if I were a multimillionaire CEO of a media conglomerate whose salary was voted on by a bunch of other multimillionaire CEOs and we'd all get screwed if shareholders got to vote on our pay, I would never let the public see it either. How convenient for them is it that information that directly effects their insanely high salaries, as well as a perfect example of the absolute shadieness of their political puppets in Congress, will never get shown on their networks!

I do have to say on the positive side (see Mom, I can think positive), the sweetest part of this is, those cold, hard facts were delivered with a hilarious, biting sarcasm from an openly-gay liberal Democrat from Massachusetts... you can almost hear Pat Robertson's head exploding.

"Traitors Don't Get To Question My Patriotism"

Thank You Bill Maher.

What a crazy idea.

Bravo.

How bad is it?

This bad.

That sound you here is a thousand jealous mob bosses yelling "Oooo!" in complete disbelief at this flagrant abuse of power. Why in the hell would CBS put it on their website, but not air it? They are intentionally reducing the viewership of this piece to a fraction of what it should be! Their reason? Too graphic. Right...

While our Sore-Loser-Spoiled-Brat-Messianic-Male-Cheerleader-In-Chief continues to listen only to Satan, our media enables him by continuing to neglect its principle mission: to use our airways to keep us informed. The stories are of death counts and of politics-as-sport, but all too often the reality of the TWO wars our country is fighting gets swept under the rug for wall to wall Rosie-Hates-Donnie coverage. We are not being shown the reality of what we have done. I of course don't mean the "Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh! We're Paintin' Schools and Spreadin' Freedumb!" stories the right wants to spread so they feel better about their chest-thumping support for lunatics and their catostrophic genocidal decisions. I mean the reality of what it is like there.

The truth about Iraq is that it is in total chaos. I and most of America know this from various reports from people who have lived there for months, even years, from the generals who Bush fired for disagreeing with his predetermined fantasy of what the reality is there, from veterans who describe it as nothing less then unleashing the gates of hell, and from the glimpses of truth the media allows (and there is no other word for it) me to see in between their corporate whoring for penis pills and potato chips.

Logan, who is in Iraq, decribes her piece as "a story that is largely being ignored, even though this istakingplace verysingle day in central Baghdad, two blocks from where our office is located."

Keep in mind, Bush thinks that 17,000 US troops are going to put an end to this.

from mediachannel:
Several bodies are shown in the two- minute segment–”some with obvious signs of torture,” as Logan points out. She also notes that her crew had to flee for their lives when they we were warned of an impending attack. While fleeing, another civilian was killed before their eyes.

Logan’s email, with the one-word subject line of ‘help’, was sent to friends and colleagues imploring them to lobby CBS to highlight that people are interested in seeing the piece. In it, Logan argues that the story is “not too gruesome to air, but rather too important to ignore… It should be seen. And people should know about this.”

Watch the video. Please read and participate in spreading this (and other clips, blogs, articles etc) link above around to your friends. After you've called CBS to challenge their absense of logic (i.e. not airing this brilliant piece of journalism while continuing to air the intellectual pornography that is Armed and Famous and THREE different CSI series), please call Congress and whoever represents you and beg them to impeach these maniacs before they bomb Iran and destroy us all. They lied us into this war. They continue to lie to us. They have murdered 650,000 innocent people and want to kill more. They are criminals of the first order and have perpetrated crimes against humanity in the form of this illegal invasion and illegal occupation.

And our media, no doubt ailing from the collective broken kneecaps they have all suffered from 6 years of genuflecting to power at every opportunity, is an absolute disgrace and an accomplice in this crime. Lara Logan is one amoung very few who still practice actual journalism on television. But, as the story describes, it ain't always easy being in the mainstream. Also, I don't think that CBS was, in this case, being sinister. I just think they were being stupid.

Call CBS. Challenge them on their logic. Tell them this: "If while watching a three hour broadcast of the most violent sport in the civilised world, I repeatedly have to watch Bob Dole explain to me how, thanks to a little blue pill, he can finally revive his long forgotton nights of raunchy conservative coitus with his elderly wife, then why can't I see what's really going on in Iraq."

I am still holding out hope...

Al.

How Sociopaths Say "I Was Wrong."

"Well, no question, decisions have made things unstable." (Update: How pathetic is it that Matt Drudge calls such a statement "candor?")

I think President Bush has lost his mind. I am not saying that to insult him, because I truly believe he’s going crazy. I would be too if I were him. Look at the situation we’re in and how insane he sounds. I watched the speech and was blown away by his demeanor- his hollow, monotonous delivery and his deer-in-headlights expression- literally scared me. “This is what happens when an absolute madman is in charge,” I kept saying. Unfortunately, what was scarier than how David Koresh-like Bush seemed in delivering his speech, was the truly bizarre plan itself. OK, so, the entire world is at stake, and yet when we went in and people told you that we needed 300+ thousand troops for Iraq, they were fired. And now we are stuck so badly that our options have turned into leaving now or leaving later with absolutely nothing different on the ground. Wait, did I just hear him warn Iran? Did I just hear him warn the Iraqi PM? Three years after "mission accomplished” and we can’t even hold Baghdad? Wow, what a mess, I am sure his plan will be as dictated by the November elections… Wait, what’s his plan? A 15% increase in troop levels over several months! And Americans on door-to-door patrols commanded by the Iraqis! None of it makes sense. Lawrence O’Donnell even said that this means it’s only around 5,000 more troops on the ground at any given time. That’s nonsense. Why send them in the first place. This is so nuts. We can’t stop a 1,000 year-old religious battle with 5000 more troops. Get OUT! It’s over. We lost. Badly. On the world stage. It’s over. Vietnam II and we lost it too. Adding more troops, at this late stage, only provides more bodies for the insurgency to shoot at. There are like four civil wars going oon over there and we can't help win any of them. Also, why are they taking troops OUT of Afghanistan for this? Excuse me? We’re going to lose both! Please start the impeachment hearings soon!

Also, watch Road to Guantanamo if you want to see how we're "winning."

Blahg

"What's wroung, you haven't posted ohn ya blahg?"

Common question, and I am afraid the answer is as pathetic as it gets: I am totally exhausted. Give to the USO and to Habitat for Humanity for Christmas.

The National Period Stain Is Over

Wow, did I pick a bad week to start a new job. On that note, what an economy!

WaaaaWaaaaWaaaah (horn sound)

I have actually been logging nonstop 12 to 18 hour days, mostly in front of a computer since I started my new job, so the last thing I wanted to do was come home and sit in front of another computer and type. But, now that my hell week is over.... and an understatement for sure, but what a day for the Democrats. I think besides the neverending days I have been doing, I have been hesitant to post because I wanted to wait until George Allen finally conceded and also, I wanted to kinda take it all in.

Its pretty sweet moment when you look at it all... for science, the working class, hopefully the lower class, the uninsured, college students and graduates, habeus corpus, warrentless wiretaps, torture as an acceptable American value, actual Christianity, protecting women's rights, protecting voter's rights, protecting the internet, and for those of us that want to investigate the sick thugs in the White House for their lies getting us into Iraq and their absolute defiance of the reality on the ground there. Also, the environment won big on Tuesday, and that fucking rocks. On that note, I'd like to personally thank everyone who voted against Richard Pombo, a complete pollution industry-loved douchebag representing a district just north of where I am (CA-11) who was one of the worst evironmental congressmen in history. This man would drill for oil in a school for lepers if you'd let him and he was about as intelligent a speaker as the love child of Christopher Moltisanti and Andrew Dice Clay. The GOP spent tons trying to save his seat and a little known candidate not even supported by the DNC in the primary named Jerry McNerney beat him. Yes!

Anyway, I hope the Democrats can do something in every one of those areas above and with both chambers, it will be much, much easier. Thank God that Reagan's former Navy Secretary took back the Senate for the Democrats. (A note to any right wingers that may have stumbled here, I must say, the irony of that victory was not missed by this snarky bastard, let me tell you. And watching Allen's concession speech, I literally cried tears of joy. I was also masturbating at the time, and I was calling my the guy filming me a "macacca," but seriously, I definetly felt something salty falling from my eye while I was laughing hysterically. So, yeah, I was crying, call me a liberal.)

I predicted this kind of wave shortly after the 2004 "election" and was scoffed at by a Republican sparrring partner, who just didn't see any sort of Dem takever in the cards, especially in the Senate. At the time, I predicted a backlash to the Republican's wave and said that the momentum would swing back and the Dems would take the house and senate. After laughing that thought off, this person sent me an excel sheet with all of these GOP senators that were safe and said there was no way they'd be knocked off. On that list were Burns, Talent, Santorum, Allen, etc all listed as "safe." I gotta think, this has to espescially hurt for him and the rest of the Kool Aide drinkers that backed "future presidents" like Allen and the third most powerful man in the Senate, Rick "Man On Dog" Santorum.

So, like a good liberal, I'll pray for that guy, because he's gotta be hurtin right now.

And for those of us that backed Howard Dean and his 50 state strategy, I gotta say, "Briahhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaahiiiiiiihahhhhhhgggghhghghggh!!!!!" Remember how he was going to destroy the party and how he would alienate more voters than he would bring in? Well, he completely fucking dominated and in doing so proved yet again that conventional wisdom is the currency of retards. It wasn't just Dean of course, it was everyone, but to think of how widespread the criticism of Dean was, is just so mindblowingly comforting today.

But, of course, with this feeling of hope and proud gloating comes that prickly little sense of negativity that only a true liberal could muster at a moment like this. Here are my reasons for not really feeling like the left won as much as it could have.

They won control of Congress at one of the worst moments in our nations history. Iraq is a complete disaster. Sure, I would much rather have them in charge right now, but being half in charge of a quagmire is not an enviable posistion. The situation there is so beyond winnable that pulling out may be the only option and when that happens, the Democrats will be painted as the chicken shits who lost Iraq. I can already see the McCain for Prez commercials showing how he fought to send more troops but Nancy Pelosi said no way because we needed the troops home to defend gay marriages. Maybe the public is smarter than that, but its happend before. My opinion, set a timetable and withdraw. Give the Iraqis no more than 6 months to get their forces together and quell this civil war, (I know, how can you ask a man to die for a mistake) and then start withdrawing to the perimeter, and take as many forces as possible and put them in Afghanistan, which, btw, is falling apart.

Also, the Democrats won with a few people I would rather never hear from again in my life, most noteworthy of course, Joe Lieberman. His ego is actually bigger as a result of his defiance of his party. Now, he'll caucus with the Democrats, keep his seniority and will be a nonstop pain in the ass as he attempts to get both sides of the aisle to kiss his ring. He will destroy the Democrats on critical issues in the future I can almost guarantee it. On Harry Reid and the rest of the Democrats who abandoned Ned Lamont in that contest, shame on you. I almost hope Lieberman fucks with you just to teach you a lesson.

Rummy resigning is almost certainly a blessing. But in typical Busha Nostra fashion, they've nominated a man who is a treasonous mass murdering criminal to fix Iraq. Bravo! Who feels safer?

The oversight issue is huge, and maybe its too huge. I am pumped that there will finally be a Congress that investigates and oversees this sociopath, but with sooooo much criminal activity to look in to, some things will actually get ignored as a matter of time and prioritizing. Henry Waxman, who will chair the House Government Reform Committee said, "The most difficult thing will be to pick and choose." I take this to mean that maybe war profiteers will be nailed, but maybe not evironmental criminals. Not everyone will pay for their sins.

The overall media narrative of the Democrats win has been pathetic. They were so swept up by Gates' day after doomsday nomination that some almost forgot that a week previous Bush straight up lied about Rummy to "get to the next question." They threw around words like "pragmatist" and "problem solver" while they should have been using words like "mafia" and "treason." Also, there is a lot of talk about how conservative all the new dems are. And while there might be some moderates in the bunch, I can't stand the fact that even in defeat, the media keeps trumping Tuesday's blue tide as a victory for conservatism. (Atrios nails it.) It proves once again that the media are not even remotely liberal.

But don't let the media spinmeisters fool you: there doesn't need to be a era of nicely tied bipartisanship in Washington. The Democrats destroyed in the House. They won big across the country in state and local offices. They won big in governors races. And, most importantly, they won overwhelmingly in the Senate. It was close in a few states that put Dems over the top, but nationally it was an 11.6 percent whooping. Add to that Bush's 31 percent and the only word you should be thinking of is "mandate."

Let's roll.

A Global Recession

That's where we're heading if we don't address climate change. (via Think Progress)

The Guardian:
Britons face the prospect of a welter of new green taxes to tackle climate change, as the most authoritative report on global warming warns it will cost the world up to £3.68 trillion unless it is tackled within a decade.

The review by Sir Nicholas Stern, commissioned by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and published tomorrow, marks a crucial point in the debate by underlining how failure to act would trigger a catastrophic global recession. Unchecked climate change would turn 200 million people into refugees, the largest migration in modern history, as their homes succumbed to drought or flood.

Stern also warns that a successor to the Kyoto agreement on cutting greenhouse gas emissions should be signed next year, not by 2010/11 as planned. He forecasts that the world needs to spend 1 per cent of global GDP - equivalent to about £184bn - dealing with climate change now, or face a bill between five and 20 times higher for damage caused by letting it continue. Unchecked climate change could thus cost as much as £566 for every man, woman and child now on the planet - roughly 6.5 billion people. ...

So many evil liberals.

Yeah, this looks exaggerated. Riiiiiiiiiiggghhhttt. I have been calling them what they are for years- fearmongering liars. And in the mainstream, its been hinted at before by people like John Dean, Howard Dean, John Kerry, and of course Colbert and Stewart. But no one has said it as clearly and as bluntly as Keith Olberman. Their latest ad is yet another reason why these sick bastards need to be booted out of office. They are doing Osama Bin Laden's work for him, while letting him roam free. They told us after 9-11 to "Never forget" as if someone could forget 9-11 even if they tried. But in looking back, I don't think they mean, "Never forget that we were attacked," I think they mean "Never forget how scared you were." And to make sure you don't forget, they will do what they've always done, use terrorism for political purposes while refusing to actually fight it. (Also see the shameful use of real terror alerts in the history of false alarms.)

Bravo Keith.

Champions of Morality

This is just nuts. Heckuva job, running that war you chose to start.

Remember that time you said it was 30,000 or so people? Oh, how you managed to shrug that off. You could almost taste the jellybeans.

Oh, dear. I can't imagine the last time I was off by over 20 times! And I mean on anything, not human live's lost because I just plain like acting like a tough guy with other peoples kids, husbands, daughters, fathers, mothers, sons. Yeah, we're resolute! It'll be shock, then, awe will follow. Yeah! YeeHaa!!!

But 655,000 people. That's a lot.

Like I said, I'm never off by that much. Like when the bill comes to the table at a restaurant, I'm shocked if I'm not within $8! Rarely do I ever think it will be a $20 tab, and it ends up being $400! And that's what I mean, that would be awful to be that far off. And that's just food and beer.

I can't imagine the daily tumble your brain must take as you try to say with a straigt face "30,000" when you know that this world has actually lost over 20 times that figure because you're a sociopath.

And while I'm on this topic, why was the Johns Hopkins/Les Roberts' study disregarded all over the media without any one of those freaking Bushspeak stenographers asking him how he conducted his study? "Who cares what all the universities and Zogby and all the other pollsters say! The President said the independent death count of his war wasn't credible, so therefore it must not be credible. Copy that!"

Why was the President (someone who has everything to gain for presenting his version of the truth) and his Press Secretary essentially taken at their word that the figure was lower, 20 times lower, then the study actually shows?

Anyway, thank God for Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez.

Watching the talking heads, those that dared even brush by this subject, I saw and heard this-

President Bush: It was pretty well -- the methodology is pretty well discredited... You know, I stand by the figure [30,000]. A lot of innocent people have lost their life -- 600,000, or whatever they guessed at, is just -- it's not credible.

- WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more than I saw this response...

Les Roberts: You know, I don't want to sort of stoop to that level and start saying general slurs, but I just want to say that what we did, this cluster survey approach, is the standard way of measuring mortality in very poor countries where the government isn’t very functional or in times of war. And when UNICEF goes out and measures mortality in any developing country, this is what they do. When the U.S. government went at the end of the war in Kosovo or went at the end of the war in Afghanistan and the U.S. government measured the death rate, this is how they did it. And most ironically, the U.S. government has been spending millions of dollars per year, through something called the Smart Initiative, to train NGOs and UN workers to do cluster surveys to measure mortality in times of wars and disasters.

So, I think we used a very standard method. I think our results are couched appropriately in the relative imprecision of [inaudible]. It could conceivably be as few as 400,000 deaths. So we’re upfront about that. We don’t know the exact number. We just know the range, and we’re very, very confident about both the method and the results.

...

And another thought is that -- quite unrelated -- if someone said in the 9/11 attacks, “I think only 200 or 300 people really died,” we would be really, really upset. And I think in the long view, the danger of discarding this study, if it’s correct, is that, at a moment when we as a society should be showing contrition, our leaders have essentially expressed indifference to an extraordinary level of suffering. And that’s just the wrong message in terms of either our long-term security or peace in the Middle East.

God, I wish that statement was plastered all over the tube and the papers, but sadly it was not. But Bush's "indifference to an extraordinary level of suffering" was shown all over the place.

Thanks liberal media!

And thank you Mr. President for breeding terrorists, killing American soldiers, and murdering over half a million innocent people. My only hope is that before each of them died they could hear, over the triumphant sound of "Freedom" marching straight over their deathbeds of course, the faint sound of you and your supporters congratulating yourselves on restoring honor and integrity to the White House.

655,000 people.

Wow.

Government Handouts

If this is what they're passing out, sign me up.

And, yes I'm kidding, and yes, I think giving this to people against their will is criminal and certainly qualifies as torture.

"Nuts"

Who knew Rove and I agreed on what these people really are. But, it is actually helping the Bushites from having to seriously answer for far more important stories: our war of choice with Iraq, a now-nuclear North Korea, still no OBL, Iran and of course, the corruption and influence peddling of Jack Abramoff.

Yesterday's NYT Editorial Page:

The sordid Mark Foley controversy has diverted public attention from another major Washington ethics scandal - the influence peddling involving the disgraced former superlobbyist Jack Abramoff. That's good news for the Bush administration, given freshly heightened suspicion that its dealings with Mr. Abramoff and his sleazy K Street operation were far cozier than it is willing to admit.

The White House has consistently played down the ties key officials like Karl Rove had with Mr. Abramoff, who pleaded guilty last January to conspiring to bribe public officials. But the administration has declined to publicly provide detailed answers or grant full access to relevant documents needed to establish the truth.

A newly released report, prepared with unusual bipartisan backing by the House Government Reform Committee, paints a different reality. It reveals that between January 2001 and March 2004, Mr. Abramoff and members of his staff had some 485 contacts with key White House officials, including at least 10 direct contacts between Mr. Abramoff and Mr. Rove. Billing records and e-mail messages unearthed by the committee indicate that Mr. Abramoff and his colleagues spent nearly $25,000 on meals and tickets for White House officials.

The report belies Mr. Rove's description of Mr. Abramoff as merely a "casual acquaintance." An assistant to Mr. Rove, Susan Ralston, who resigned on Friday, had formerly worked for Mr. Abramoff. The report suggests that she sought Mr. Abramoff's help to obtain seats for Mr. Rove and his aides at popular sporting events, and often acted as a conduit, passing messages between the lobbyist and top White House officials, including Mr. Rove and Ken Mehlman, the current chairman of the Republican National Committee who was then a senior White House political strategist.

Indeed, it appears that Mr. Rove sat with Mr. Abramoff in the lobbyist's box seats for an N.C.A.A. basketball playoff game in 2002, an occasion Mr. Abramoff memorialized in an e-mail message to a colleague. "Told me anytime we need something just let him know through Susan."

It is plain that Mr. Abramoff had unusual access. As for his effectiveness, Mr. Abramoff rated the results as "mixed." But he scored some important victories. In 2002, for example, the administration made the unusual decision to release $16.3 million to a Mississippi tribe Mr. Abramoff represented, notwithstanding the Justice Department's opposition to the project. The role campaign gifts and contacts between Mr. Abramoff and Mr. Mehlman may have played in this action is a matter warranting close scrutiny by prosecutors, and further digging by the committee.

As Tom Davis of Virginia, the Republican chairman of the committee, and Henry Waxman of California, the ranking Democrat, take pains to note, their report is based on documents that were provided under subpoena by Mr. Abramoff's firm and, for the most part, tell just one side of the story. The White House spin is that Mr. Abramoff had a well-known affinity for exaggerating the impact of his lobbying efforts. If so, full disclosure of relevant records by the White House could help support that claim. Meanwhile, the idea that Mr. Abramoff exerted no influence with the administration seems about as believable as Mark Foley's early claim that his only interest in 16-year-old pages was "mentoring."

Oh Schnap!!!

Holy Dear Christ

Fair and Balance"D"

Hmmmm.... I watch Hardball , Maher, Countdown, Jon Stewart, Colbert, all of it religiously. I read blogs, newspapers, magazines all day long, I am constantly on YouTube, Crooks and Liars, etc. And I can't remember the last time I read or saw a segment like this, so brutally honest and so incredibly alone in its place among its peers. It comes from Amy Goodman at Democracy Now! and details just what America lost today. The rest of the media should take a cue from Ms. Goodman and cover this, but I guess burning the Constitution isn't all that "sexy."

Thank God for Patrick Leahy and shame on the twelve Democrats who joined with the Republicans; Tom Carper of Delaware, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, as well as Senator Menendez of New Jersey, Bill Nelson of Florida, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Senator Pryor of Arkansas, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, Ken Salazar of Colorado, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut. They, along with all but one of the Republicans, helped to eliminate basic human rights held since the Magna Carta. They are an embarassment to America and to the Democratic Party. They are the personification of the charge that the Democrats are spineless dogs. They should be ashamed and I hope they are haunted by the screams of defenseless, forgotten prisoners in their sleep. Those Democrats along with all Republicans except Chafee are guilty of crimes against humanity and ushering a nightmareish Orwellian reality of absolute power.

This is as much of an embarassment in the history of our nation as the internment of the Japanese. We are literally watching a democracy turn into a Kingdom right before our eyes. Hopefully sanity will return someday and this will be seen as a black mark on the Congress like the Red Scare is seen today. But as these maniacs go forward and the opposition lays down time and time again, the light at the end of that tunnel is getting fainter and fainter.

Here's a snippet:

Senator Patrick Leahy: ... Of course, in the Hamdan decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has made it very clear that it is available in somebody captured. In a case like what he was talking about, if somebody had been captured there and held in prison, and they said, “You have the wrong person,” they could at least raise it.

And you also have, of course, under the Constitution, that habeas can be suspended if there is an invasion, if there is an insurrection. We have neither case here. Even the most conservative Republican legal thinkers have said this is not a case to suspend habeas corpus.

You know, they can set up all the straw men they want, but the fact is this allows the Bush administration to act totally arbitrarily with no court or anybody else to raise any questions about it. It allows them to cover up any mistakes they make. And this goes beyond just marking everything “secret,” as they do now. Every mistake they make, they just mark it “secret.” But this is even worse. This means somebody could be locked up for five years, ten years, fifteen years, twenty years. They have the wrong person, and they have no rights to be able to say, “Hey guys, you’ve got the wrong person.” It goes against everything that we’ve done as Americans.

You know, when things like this were done during the Cold War in some of the Iron Curtain countries, I remember all the speeches on the Senate floor, Democrats and Republicans alike saying, “How horrible this is! Thank God we don’t do things like this in America.” I wish they’d go back and listen to some of their speeches at that time.

Michael Ratner, President of the Center For Constitutional Rights: ... The President can decide tomorrow that you, Amy, or me, or particularly a non-citizen, can be picked up, put in jail forever, essentially, and if you're a non-citizen in Guantanamo or anywhere else in the world, you never get a chance to go to court to test your detention. It’s an incredible thing, and any senator who voted for this, in my view, is essentially guilty, guilty, guilty of undermining basic fundamental rights and may well be guilty of war crimes, as well.

All I ask is that you watch the segment and ask yourself if you still recognize your country.

To Catch A Predator

Did I say predator, I meant GOP Congressman in charge of Missing and Exploited Children.

Hi-fucking-larry-ass! And, guess what, Fox News still has an agenda. But this time it happens in October... go figure... And, sure, the media will love it and the Republicans will say "He's tough... He's strong... They were a threat..." while trying to keep a straight face... and the Democrats will lose the House because they just never could quite keep the media or their own party focused on Iraq... and then another war with "embeds" and a post war world unimaginable. But hell, fredom is on the march, so, we got that going for us.

But, seriously. what are the consequences of another war of choice, against Iran?

Gary Hart:
The consequences? The sunny neoconservatives whose goal has been to become the neo-imperial Middle Eastern power all along will forcast few. But prudent leaders calculate all the risks, and they are historic.

These include: violent reaction throughout the Islamic world; a dramatic increase in jihadist attacks in European capitals and the U.S.; radicalization of Islamic youth behind a new generation of jihadist leaders; consolidation of support for Hamas, Hezbollah, al Qaeda, and a rapidly spreading malignant network; escalating expansion of anti-American sentiment throughout the world, including the democratic world; and the formation of WWIII battle lines between the U.S. and the Arab and Islamic worlds.

In more rational times, including at the height of the Cold War, bizarre actions such as unilateral, unprovoked, preventive war are dismissed by thoughtful, seasoned, experienced men and women as mad. But those qualities do not characterize our current leadership.

For a divinely guided president who imagines himself to be a latter day Winston Churchill (albeit lacking the ability to formulate intelligent sentences), and who professedly does not care about public opinion at home or abroad, anything is possible, and dwindling days in power may be seen as making the most apocalyptic actions necessary.

WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen.

Iran

We're already there? It seems right out of the Bush-Rove-Satan-Cheney playbook to ready the forces with our election so close. This way Dubya can make a big splash right before the election and scare the living shit out of enough voters. Maybe Bin Laden will "release" another tape two days before this election too. In any event, war with Iran is a disasterous idea, but I wouldn't put it past this sick bastard to try (with a new war, yeah!!!) to give himself the bounce the press has been searching for for years.

Freedom Is On The March!

Awesome! I love it when the foreign press exposes our completely flawed election process!
(from Altercation)

More on the moron...

So, I was furious with Bush yesterday. I wasn't really ready for it at all. I had no really heavy heart nor an empty indifference leading up until the fifth anniversary of 9/11. That is to say my usual 'Bush Meter' reading remained at level- "I hate this fucking moron and his complete destruction of the world" but did not slip to level- "I moving to Canada" or even rise to the occasional, laughter inducing level- "Jesus, this guy is retarded, did he just massage a female world leader and bark and swear at another world leader with his mouth full of food in the same weekend? Does he think they were secretly filming 'Porky's at the G8?'" But for some reason, after replaying that day over in my head, I began thinking about how much Bush blew it after 9/11. I was not really obsessing over 9/11, just coming to grips with it all over again. Then I watched Bush's primetime speech and just lost it.

Every thought ran into the next... Just bafflement at looking at the pictures of Bush choking when it mattered most for over 7 minutes, then dividing a united world with his crusaders rhetoric, then to demonizing opposing viewpoints, then the administration's resisting the investigations that the widows wanted, than Iraq, then the swiftboats, then stealing another election, and still no UBL, still no 9/11 commission recommendations in place but hey, we're fighting them in Iraq so they can't fight us here but don't you fucking dare take any Poland Springs on the plane, and lets still do next to nothing to really protect our ports or our borders. Let's not build up schools but lets masquerade under a slogan, a slogan that like the Clean Skies or the Healthy Forests programs, competes for the title of "Most Opposite Name For What A Program Actually Does" in some Orwellian Olympics. Fuck feeding poor, starving kids, Jesus would have almost certainly handed out tax cuts. Soon they'll be using the story of Lazarus to justify eliminating the 'Death Tax.' You can almost see the commercial.

And I almost hope the hicks, farmers, and ignorant good ol' boys enjoy the fact that they are paying $4 a gallon gas and have no health care and their wages are going down and even though they voted for this feckless frat boy who has never worked a day in his life, I hope they also enjoy the fact that boys can still kiss and girls can still get abortions. And in the Right's constant attempt at rewriting of history and science and ignoring global warming while embracing creationism and all the while the lies. The lies that never stop. A non-stop faucet of deceit behind a drumbeat of religious demogaugery aided by an ill-informed, willfully ignorant, overly religious, authoritarian flock of brainwashed cowards.

Unbelievable.

Then I think, what about Gore? What about Kerry? What about Dean for Christ's sake? All would have been far superior to this gibbering ex-coke head. Would they have really taken more vacation days than any other president? Would they have sat there for seven minutes or a month earlier, would any one of those men responded to a CIA briefing that included the infamous 'Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the US' memo with, "OK, you covered your ass" as this President did? Would any of them expose a CIA agent's identity while we were at war while she was working in the very intelligence office that dealt with the central reason (what was it again, oh yeah W!M!D!) of why we were at war in the first place?

Arrrrggggghhhh!!!

Then I think of the Democrats and stopping this sociopath before another 9/11, fake war, or Katrina happens. And sadly, I don't see it. I don't see them fighting like they should be.

No election this year should be even close. The Democrats should win every single seat vs. someone who even remotely supports this reality-AWOL criminal. Every single day the Democrats should sing a chorus of Bush's lies, Rumsfeld's inneptitude, the press's inaccuracies, lies, and bias, they should boycott and sue Faux News and they should show pictures of Abu Ghraib, Mission Accomplished, Katrina, Bush-the-G8-massaging-national-embarrassment, the unprotected ports, Rove, Delay, Enron, Kenny Boy Lay and the letters of 'Thank yous' and 'well wishes' Bush wrote to him, show pictures of Abramoff, Valerie Plame, Usama, panoramic shots of American Corporations lining the streets of Beijing, drowning polar bears, Cheney in his hunting uniform, Cheney snarling, Cheney in front of Han Solo incased in carbonite at Jabba's palace, gas pumps, the national debt clock, and flag-draped coffins.

Every single day. Non-stop. I am sick and tired of this bullshit and you just know that anyone who A) runs a criminal organization like Bush's Crime Family and B) will almost certainly get indicted if the Democrats win subpoena power, will be playing hardball. But for some reason the Democrats won't strike back with viscously delivered, brutal honesty.

Basically, stop playing wiffle ball while the other guy is using aluminum and BALCO.

I think it is great that Ted Kennedy and others immediately blasted the Pres for his decision to abuse what should be a day above even his distortions, but it wasn't hard enough and it wasn't met with a united rage from every single Democrat today. Instead, the Democrats spoke out with the passion and tenacity of a skinny Nevadan reading a prepared statement with his head in his notes. By the end of the day the press was talking about the Republicans actually accusing the Democrats of politiczing the day. The knock out blow came from John "tanny Boy" Boner who said that he couldn't tell why the Democrats wanted to help Al Queda more than the American people.

You see, that's hardball. That's the money quote, and the guy almost certainly wasn't reading that line off a prepared statement. The Democrats need to point out Bush's shallowness and complete disregard for the memory of the 9/11 victims and keep reminding the public that this guy is a liar with no morals and abosolutly no plan. Take it to him hard and bang the drum all day every day. No more of the guy from the tanning salon calling calling anyone else a nancybitch.

Look, if we have to live in a world where Fox News can be "shocked" that James Frey wrote a fake memoir, than we should also live in a world where the Democrats can actually call President Flight Suit and his Republican Codpieces of Congress what they really are: servants of Satan destroying the world through lies, manipulation, corruption, cronyism, stealing and war.

And that brings me back toward why I got so pissed off yesterday. It was not the images of 9/11. It was not rethinking my own 9/11 experience and reliving all the feelings of that day and letting rage get the best of me. Instead, I got those feelings after watching Bush piss on the memory of 9/11 by using his primetime speech to the nation to discuss how important his bogus war in Iraq is.

In what should have been an act of national healing, our president showed us the hubris that probably earned him his first DUI, and only comes from a lifetime of living with an equally psychotic father and a woman souless and vapid enough to think American refugees were "better off" living in a football stadium.

In the emptiest gesture of American politics I have ever seen, President Bush tried, again, to rewrite one of histories greatest failures and tie it to one of our most sacred days.

What balls.

Weeks ago, when asked what Saddam had to do with 9/11, the President answered "Nothing." At the time he was challenged, he was smack dab in the middle of intertwining the two narratives, as he and everyone else at Castle Grayskull have been doing for years.

Since then he and members of his administration have muddied the water on that topic again and again and have compared the now-majority of Americans who have realized he's full of shit, as appeasers to the Nazi's, Fascists, and Al-Queda.

And last night, as always, when the choice comes down to basic human decency and the truth vs. fearmongering and complete bullshit, the president went with the ladder.

It wasn't the first time he politicized 9/11, but to me, it certainly was the most offensive.

I am surprised he didn't unnecessarily raise the terror alert and cut to shots of a Gay Wedding throughout the speech.

Anyway, this fraud has taken the gloves off too many times and the Democrats need to hit back, and don't let vocal supporters like Santorum and Saint McCain off the hook, no matter what the media does. Let America know that this disgraceful lunatic is supported with an absolute power granted to him by his Do-Nothing Congress. And they should do so like the Republicans always do, by going extremely negative, but unlike the GOP, they should do it with the truth.

But before running all of those other ads I mentioned, they should start with airing an ad showing clips from yesterday's despicable speech with a scrolling "How dare he disgrace 9/11 like this..." intertwined with clips of the Republican candidates who support him.

Take the gloves off. He politicized it, and now the Democrats should disgrace him for doing so.

Update: Atrios has a really good point here. If it's the biggest struggle in the history of the world, why are we fighting it without enough of a military force? Also, why tax cuts and not more of a homeland sacrifice?

Update Update: This is the kind of thing I am talking about.

Five Years Later...

Thank you Keith Olberman.

Democrats need to start sounding like that.

Facts are so boring...

God, the real 9-11 was so boring ABC had to create drama and 100% fiction to make it interesting to viewers. First there's Keith Olbermann who, thank God, still is the lone liberal voice in the mainstream media. His take on the new, new, new, new, new Rove/Bush/Rumsfeld line is priceless.

Then there's ABC's shameless 9-11 movie, The Path to 9/11, which has scenes in it that have been completely refuted by the 9-11 Commision report- a report which the filmmakers and ABC claim it is based. Actually the movie was written by a staunch conservative activist and friend of Rush Limbaugh. Think Progress has all the details and spend a minute to tell ABC what you think.

And while the GOP are out there proclaiming how they're the party of "super Christians," I found this article on the state of the poor striking.

E.J. Dionne:

After a week of remembering the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, the most depressing realization is how easily our leaders forgot their fervent promises to lift up our nation's poorest citizens.

All manner of politicians and columnists said in Katrina's wake that this was the time to revisit the problems of the destitute. The anguish of the people of New Orleans's Lower Ninth Ward would have at least some redemptive power if the country took poverty seriously again.

It didn't happen. The innovative ideas that came from all sides were swept off the table. The poor became unfashionable once more. Congressional conservatives changed the conversation. A concern for the struggling gave way to debate over how to offset spending on Katrina with budget cuts -- directed in large part at programs for the needy.

Perhaps the release of the Census Bureau's annual report on income, poverty and health insurance coverage in this particular week is a sign that God and statisticians have a sense of humor. The report reinforces what we knew at the time of Katrina -- that the poor are still with us and that the middle class keeps losing ground.

Read the rest for some staggering statistics.

Timeline

Randi Rhodes puts together one heckuva job here.

Don't forget that these people hate government and therefore are in no posistion to run it.

Jesus Camp

Krazy Kidz.

Thanks to my brother mike for the link. (via Buzzflash)

Anti-terror police in Britain have made an angry request to their US counterparts asking them to stop leaking details of this month's suspected bomb plot over fears that it could jeopardise the chances of a successful prosecution and hamper the gathering of evidence.

The British security services, MI5 and MI6, are understood to be dismayed that a number of sensitive details surrounding the alleged plot - including an FBI estimate that as many as 50 people were involved - were leaked to the media.

FBI sources confirmed to The Observer that the bureau had been ordered to stop briefing at the request of the British authorities. 'The shutters have come down,' a bureau source said. 'We have been told not to discuss the case any more.'

The request for silence by the British authorities is an early sign that those involved in the investigation have concerns at the way their evidence-gathering is proceeding. It is understood that British anti-terror police wanted to prolong their observation of the suspects for as long as possible in a bid to gather sufficient evidence. There are now fears among some Scotland Yard officers that they may have acted too hastily when deciding to arrest the 24 suspects earlier this month. Although martydom videos and the components of a bomb have been recovered in the investigation, linking such evidence to all those arrested could still prove difficult.

I love how Karl Rove's masterplan trumps safety... everytime.

What's that you say, I am being too negative? Unreal. It was at this bar/club/lunge type thing and there were all of these people in like the best shape ever just flying around and popping off and spinning and competing. It was like the last scene in 8 Mile, because we- the non breakers- just formed a circle around the dance floor and were like "OOOOooooooooooo!!!" every three seconds. It was so freaking cool. Plus, $1 beers, how awesome is that shite! My favorite thing was when it was time to change dancers, the people would do like this kind of dance-diss to their opponant just like in some cheesey cheerleading movie.

Holy crap it was fun.

Denis Leary and Lenny Clarke In the NESN booth

Here's the clip in case you missed it.

World's Best Grandpa!

I never get tired of pointing out the Fairness and Balancednessnessnessnesss.

Meet the Press

The heads of both parties were on Meet the Press on Sunday and I was stunned at how clear the contrast was. What an assclown this guy is. If I were him, I would enlist in the army and go fight in Iraq now that he doesn't really have a job anymore. He really felt like he could win the primary, just as he thinks we can really win in Iraq. So, logically, if you lose one of your battles, you should redirect your joementum towards your other goals, winning in Iraq. And listen, if President Codpiece Jesus can suit up, so can Joe. Also, "for the sake of my party"? Hello? YOU LOST YOUR PARTY's PRIMARY!!!

And let's be honest for a second here, he lost because he consistently underminded the party, criticized very legitimate war criticizm, and made out with the president on the floor of the senate and then went on with Hannity to yuk it up and today his true colors came through. His core is as shallow as a puddle and the only thing Joe cares about is Joe holding on to power.

I can't even imagine the shockwaves this type of behavior has sent through mel gibson's rehab clinic.
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/14044667-115514783500376034?l=thebigmic.blogspot.com' A fantastic time and just about the most beautiful weather as you could ask for. I hear there is some sort of heat wave out there, but Oakland and San Francisco have been beautiful so far. Dear God that kid Haren kicked ass though, that was sort of depressing. Also we saw the true "heart" of Oakland when these white-wanna-be-a-street-thug kids tried about a thousand times to start a wave that just never came. So funny. They got so angry they nearly threw off their angled hats and FUBU shorts. Crawford admitted to using steroids and HGH while with Boston from 2000-01. Check out a few of his comments, which also seem to shed a controversial light on the Sox clubhouse at that time.

“During minor league spring training with the Red Sox in 1999, some of the other guys saw I was hurting,” he writes. “They told me that if I took this stuff, it would make the pain go away and cut my recovery time in half. Shoot, why not? I'm just a country boy; I didn't even think twice.

“I was probably using the most back in 2001, when I made the Red Sox rotation out of spring training. About that time I was getting pretty big, and another player introduced me to human growth hormone, which had started to make the rounds in the majors. I got a kit with two bottles: One was filled with some kind of water, and the other was filled with these tiny crystals. I put a few drops into the crystals and -- poof! -- it became liquid. I thought, Boy, what the hell are you putting into your body? But I did it anyway.

“Back in 2001, I thought I was the man. I had no shame, and I thought nobody could touch me. One time, I walked right into the Red Sox clubhouse with a bunch of needles wrapped in a towel and left them on my chair. A few minutes later, one of my teammates came running over, saying, ‘Paxton, someone knocked your chair over and your freaking needles are all over the floor!’ Man, we just died about that. He said it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen, told me I was nuts. But that's the way it was back then.”

Yeah, funny stuff.

A Stumbling Giant

Interesting weekend, to say the least. ... America is viewed as weak at the moment, distracted and drained because of Iraq—and everybody out there is taking advantage of it. Too often, Americans tend to see other players on the international stage as merely part of the backdrop, conforming to our movements or remaining stationary while we get our act together. In fact, most of these world leaders are aggressive players in their own right who will push back, and hard, when they see softness. Like Libya, they are betting that George W. You've all seen how crazy the Raider games are, but it doesn't stop there...

From today's Chronicle:
Esteban Loaiza, 34, was stopped on Wednesday morning by the California Highway Patrol after he was observed at 2:40 a.m. driving his Ferrari in excess of 100 mph on Interstate 580 near San Leandro.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after officers detected what the CHP statement called "a distinct odor of alcohol ... on the driver's breath."

Loaiza, who failed several sobriety tests, was transported to North County Jail in Oakland, where he spent the night.

Today's daytime starting pitcher for the Oakland Athletics: Esteban Loaiza.

What will we tell the children?

Holy Crap

Nasty:
This one is foul
Kevin Millar, who was in the Twin Cities with Baltimore over the weekend, left a gift for Francona in the visiting manager's office. The US Supreme Court now has added a category of those in this country no longer protected by the Constitution: Government whistleblowers. In a 5-4 ruling (the deciding vote cast by the man the Senate Democrats agreed to confirm even though he gave every indication of his neo-fascist, Bush Crime Family loyalty, Sammy “The Fish” Alito) that is being called a victory for Bush, the Justices said the 20 million Americans who work as public employees do not have free-speech protections guaranteed by the First Amendment. The First Amendment, therefore, has now been effectively nullified, joining the Fourth (the need for a proper warrant when searching for evidence) and the Eighth (the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment), the Fifth (No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury). The ruling was necessary in protecting the many illegal activities of the Bush Crime Family that might be witnessed and reported by federal employees. This decision will keep the crimes secret. Those inclined to report the crimes will now be subject to arrest, trial and imprisonment. Clearly, the impact of this latest move to totalitarianism will be sweeping, from silencing police officers who fear retribution for reporting department corruption, to subduing public employees who want to reveal incompetence (or worse ) where it concerns, for example, government hurricane preparedness or terrorist-related security, or lies told in launching a military attack against another nation, or evidence withheld that might show Bush Crime Family involvement in the September 11, 2001, terror attack on the US. The seriousness of this Supreme Court decision is further magnified by considering that the ruling overturned an appeals court decision that said Los Angeles County prosecutor Richard Ceballos was constitutionally protected when he wrote a memo questioning whether a county sheriff's deputy had lied in a search warrant affidavit. Ceballos had filed a lawsuit claiming he was demoted and denied a promotion for trying to expose the lie. In other words, the US Supreme Court has decided that revealing a search warrant was issued based upon a lie is itself a crime. Forget the illegality of the warrant to begin with. Reporting its illegality to higher authorities is now the crime. Astonishing. Unbelievable. And given the nazification of the highest court in the US, expected. Whistleblowers are now added to the list of those unprotected by law, a list that includes those who would demonstrate against the Bush Crime Family, those who would petition the government for redress of grievances, those who are accused of an act of terror (an act defined exclusively by the Bush Crime Family), either “political terror” or against property owned by corporations, an activity that now includes impeding the flow of traffic such as might be caused by union members on strike in front of a factory. Astonishing. Unbelievable. Expected. Pastor Niemoller’s statement in its entirety: “First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

(more here)

Guilty

From Michael Moore.
